Evolution of Light Weight Boulders

Did you know all of the real boulders you may purchase today are coming from somewhere other than your local area? These fields of boulders are being depleted, and once gone from an area, another site will be located at a greater distance away. This adds to the cost of the end user and ultimately destroys a small ecosystem.

Fourteen years ago Matt Wilson was introduced to artificial rock environments. The process has been around for more than fifty years in the creation of zoo enclosures and museum exhibits, but has begun to evolve applications in the residential environment. With the ability to replicate natural geologic formations, the design potential is endless. His design criteria frequently called for the use of large boulders to be interspersed in his typical landscape style. He found the difficulties of finding, moving and placing real boulders to be an expensive time consuming problem. Another problem was how to place the boulders throughout a landscape project with limited amount of effort. When the need to go faster on a project site became requirement for staying competitive in the nineties, a need was created for Second Nature.

There are many reasons you might select a Second Nature product over the real thing such as cost, choice of color, or lack of site accessibility. The cost of land and increased building densities frequently makes project sites more difficult to access with or without equipment. The cost of insurance more expensive than ever, why risk injury to yourself or workers to place real boulders in your project? You won't have to compromise the integrity of your design because of your site. Difficulties of weight, strength*, texture, consistency, appearance and color were big hurdles that have been overcome to produce the unsurpassed product which is under the Second Nature label.

*Compressive strength is in of excess of 7000 p.s.i. @ 1/2" thick zz.
